More than 1000 hours. That is how long time I have spent observing my mind. I’ve observed my mind as it went through the highest of joy and the deepest of sorrow. What I have learned can be summarised into one sentence.
Everything changes.
Meditation is the acknowledgement of change. It is to wake up to how the world is and not how we want it to be. To meditate is to arrive at this truth again, and again and again…
If there was one thing I wished for at the beginning of my practice, it was to understand that this is the most straightforward practice of meditation. You don’t need to undergo massive formal practice (although it can help).
What really matters is that you arrive fully to this moment - now.
The problem is we do not have time—I did not have time. For many years, my meditative practice strengthened my mind, helped me become better, and enabled me to think more strategically.
It was not until I encountered deep grief in life with the loss of my father-in-law and then my mother that I realised that I had been asleep for a longer time in my life.
The secret is you don’t have to wait until the world wakes you up. You can choose to arrive at this moment.
This is what your first meditation is all about.
May you awake again - and again and again.
